North Shore Beach Clean Up Sponsored By Jack Johnson’s Kokua Foundation

North Shore Surf Girls Website

Jack Johnson could be described as the North Shore’s favorite son. He grew up on the beach in front of Pipeline, surfing and playing music with his friends and brothers. When he “hit the big time”, he started giving back to the community by advocating for sustainability. In the process he started organic gardens at Sunset Beach Elementary School and reached out to Hawaii’s children with his Recycle, Reduce & Reuse program. He also is reaching adults with his Kokua Foundation and Festival. When it became known that one could get a pre-sale ticket if they participated in a beach clean up, I marked my calendar and showed up at Goat Island by 9:00AM on the appointed day, there where also clean ups at 3 other locations. The Kokua Foundation Team and Surf Rider Foundation where there to give out supplies and record names. An estimated 300 people showed up on a Saturday morning to volunteer to clean up one of my favorite Summer time surf spots, Maelaekahana Beach. Although, I pick up trash everyday while teaching surfing lessons, I could not but help think what a wonderful lesson Jack was teaching all of us. For me it was the sheer number of tiny, tiny pieces of plastic on the sand.  I shudder to think of how much of it I have added with my rate of consumption. Thanks Jack – don’t ever stop being Jack.

The Kokua Festival will be April 23 – 24, 2010 at the Waikiki Shell on the Island of Oahu. Tickets go on Sale via Ticket Master February 20,  for Hawaii residents and February 21, for the rest of the world.

Learning to Surf in Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

North Shore Surf Girls Website

Anyone can learn to Surf in Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu, even though the Hawaii tourist board likes to promote Waikiki as the best place to learn to surf, this is only because of all the hotels and expensive shops in Honolulu. The sad truth is that the beaches in Waikiki are fake, that’s right some of the sand was even mined from the North Shore’s famous Waimea Bay. The North Shore of Oahu on the other hand boast miles and miles of natural white sand beaches and has been official designated by the State of Hawaii Government as the Surfing Capitol of the World. The North Shore Surf Girls can teach you to surf even when the surf is big because we take you to a protected cove just outside of the Historic Haleiwa Town. You will lean to surf in gental rolling waves with protected green sea turtles swimming around you.

The views are amazing too. Kaiena Point, not a good place to learn to surf by the way, is visible from both the surfing lineup and the shore line. Mt. Kahala the tallest point on Oahu is also visible while you learn to surf. The beauty of the North Shore only starts there. You will fall in love not only with surfing, but with our entire community on the North Shore.

Summer Surfing on the North Shore is Slipping Away

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Surfing lessons this Summer at Chun’s Reef on the North Shore of Oahu have been very good,  thanks to a multitude of southwest and trade-wind swells wrapping around the coast.  Now it’s the middle of August and children and young people are returning to school.  The start of the winter surf season is only a month away!  The pulse of the North Shore is starting to beat harder.  People wanting to learn to surf in Hawaii will have to decide: “Should I try to learn to surf on the North Shore in the winter? Is it safe enough?”

The answer is an emphatic “Yes!”  You will find that learning to surf on the North Shore in both summer and winter is easier than in Waikiki;  the beaches and the waves are much less crowded.  Chun’s Reef surf spot on the North Shore is perfect in the summer. In the winter months we teach you to surf on the North Shore in a cove protected from the larger waves.  Actually the waves at this protected cove are pretty good — much, much better than what you’ll find at Waikiki Beach in Honolulu.  If you need to check surfing off on your Bucket List – now’s the time!

Summer Surfing Lessons on the North Shore

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Although most people think of Waikiki and surfing lessons, learning to surf in Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu in the Summer is a much better choice. The North Shore has  cleaner water then Waikiki surf, no stinging jelly fish, no crowds and 1-2 foot waves everyday! In the Winter months of course it’s a different story – but then we teach you in a cove protected from the big North Shore surf. Either way Summer or Winter learning to surf on the North Shore blows away surfing lessons in Waikiki, plus you get beautiful sunsets and free parking!

Surfer Magazine names Haleiwa Town on North Shore, Oahu as Number-Two Surfing Town in Nation

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

In its June 2009  issue, Surfer Magazine ranked Haleiwa Town on the North Shore of Oahu second in its list of Top Ten Surf Towns in America. The number-one spot went to Santa Cruz, California.  Criteria included quality of life, variety of surf, climate, access to culture, and availability of work.

It’s hard for me to fathom that Santa Cruz is a better surf town than Haleiwa. Although jobs are sometimes hard to find on the North Shore, the surfing culture is one of the most authentic in the world.  Where else can you participate in a ceremony honoring Eddie Aikau, watch the Pipe Masters and take a surfing lesson from the North Shore Surf Girls?   The water is warm year-round and the quality and variety of surf  are the best in the world.  In choosing  Santa Cruz, California, in spite of its year-round cold water,  Surfer Magazine editors cited its year round surf aloong with its reputation as a cultural melting pot of educators, artists, life-long surfers, and everyone else in between.

THE COMPLETE LIST:
1. Santa Cruz, CA
2. Haleiwa, HI
3. Encinitas, CA
4. Paia, HI
5. San Clemente, CA
6. Kill Devil Hills, NC
7. Malibu, CA
8. Montauk, NY
9. New Smyrna Beach, FL
10. Ocean City, NJ

How  surf cities such as Waikiki  got beat out by places like Ocean City, NJ or Kill Devil Hills, NC, which I’ve never even heard of, is beyond me.  As for me, I will always believe that the North Shore of Hawaii is the  greatest surfing town in the world – Surfer Magazine Rankings or not.

Why the North Shore of Oahu is a Better Place to Learn to Surf then Waikiki

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Our website

Learning to surf in Waikiki is OK, but to learn to surf on the North Shore of Oahu is about as authentic as it gets.  Below is a list of the pros and cons of each location.

Surfing Lessons in Waikiki

Surfing Lessons on the North Shore of Oahu

  • Over Crowded
  • Water quality is poor
  • Waves – flat in Winter
  • Waves – in Summer super crowded
  • Beaches imported sand dirty crowded
  • Very uncrowded – super friendly
  • Water quality is pristine
  • Waves fun and safe in winter – due to teaching in a safe protective cove
  • Waves in Summer fun, uncrowded 1-2 feet
  • Beaches pristine almost empty
  • I could go on and on about why it’s better to learn to surf on the North Shore over learning to surf in Waikiki, but the bottom line is that if you do choose to stay in Waikiki a day trip to the North Shore is a must do – so why not learn to surf in the Surfing Capitol of the World – the North Shore?
