Following our series of what we love about the North Shore of Oahu….Turtles, turtles, turtles everywhere! When taking a surfing lesson or Stand Up Paddle Board on the North Shore of Oahu you will be sure to see turtles basking in the sun, swimming in the surf or cruising down the Anahulu Stream all the while popping there adorable turtle heads up to say hi. It’s hard to not stop teaching a surfing lesson if just for a moment to say hi back to our precious green friends. I call it TADD…Turtle Attention Deficit Disorder and have named all the turtles on the North Shore Nemo. Why did I name them all Nemo? Because I can!

Haleiwa Joe’s Best Place to Eat After A Surf Lesson on the North Shore of Oahu
Wednesday, February 20th, 2013The best place to fuel up on after a surfing lesson is Haleiwa Joe’s it has great food, service and a view of Puaena Point where you just learned to surf across the bay from the front lanai. Haleiwa Joe’s also has a fun sports bar that is frequented by surfing legends. Happy hour is from 4:30 – 6:30pm on week days and from 10:00pm to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Menu options range from hamburgers to lobster and fresh fish. My favorite meal is the seared Ahi and the burnt caramel macadamia for dessert.
Spring Brings the Best Time to Learn to Surf on the North Shore.
Thursday, February 14th, 2013Learning to surf on the North Shore of Oahu is possible all year round. In the Summer Chun’s Reef is perfect for beginning surf lesson, because it catches a trade wind swell that warps around the island from the East Side of Oahu. In the Fall, Winter and Spring we teach in a protected Cove called Puaena Point. Spring is our favorite time of year to teach because the waves are perfect at Puaena and it’s getting a bit warmer. Yes, it’s always warm in Hawaii but us locals are very spoiled. We like the weather to be beyond perfect, which is what Spring brings….
Which is the Best Surf School on the North Shore of Oahu?
Tuesday, February 12th, 2013From time to time a potential surf student asks the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School what backs us better then other surf schools on the North Shore of Oahu? My response is that we don’t know, because we have never taken a surfing lesson from one of the other surf schools on the North Shore. We can tell them that with our surf school we focus on the individual needs of our surf students. For example some people are more athletic then others and may learn to surf very quickly, other people need more hands on surfing instruction. Young children also need to have more attention to keep them safe while learning to surf. One question to ask when deciding which surf school to learn from is “are they licensed and do they have insurance?”. Only a few surf schools on the North Shore are actually licensed and insured. Why the Surf is bigger on the North Shore then in Waikiki
Wednesday, November 14th, 2012Actually the surf is mostly bigger on the North Shore of Oahu then in Waikiki mostly in the winter months. More specifically when the winter is in the Northern hemisphere. During this time there is a lot of storm activity in the North Pacific which turns up the ocean and sends swells across the pacific. Some of those swells reach the North Shore of Oahu and create waves. Fortunately for our surf school and our surf students there is a protected cove near Haleiwa town on the North Shore where the waves are always small and safe.
Triple Crown of Surfing on the North Shore of Oahu – 2012 – Will Slater Bring Home the Lucky 13?
Monday, November 12th, 2012While most beginner surfers are taking lessons in small 1-2 foot waves on the North Shore of Oahu, the big boys will be battling it out for the Surfing World Title. Currently 3 surfers are in contention; Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning and of course the man himself, Kelly Slater. A complicated mathematical formula explains who has to place where in order for Slater to win. Since Parkinson is the current rankings leader on the Association of Surfing Professional, ASP, World Championship Tour, WCT, the following ASP World Title scenarios will be based on his potential finishes at Pipeline. None the less remember, we are pulling for Slater.
If Parkinson finishes 13th, 9th or 5th at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 5th or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title. (*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.)
If Parkinson finishes Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 3rd or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title. (*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.)
If Parkinson finishes 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning cannot win the 2012 ASP World Title.
If Parkinson wins the Billabong Pipe Masters, he will take the 2012 ASP World Title.

The Billabong Pipe Masters, the third jewel of the Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing, will be run from December 8 – 20, 2012.

Our Winter Surfing Lessons Location on the North Shore is Down a Road Named Kahalewai Place
Thursday, November 1st, 2012During the Winter months on the North Shore of Oahu the North Shore Surf Girls teach surf lessons in a protected cove named Puaena Point. To get there you must turn off of Kamehameha Hwy., onto an unmarked road named Kahalewai. Part of the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School’s mission in teaching people about the Hawaiian sport of surfing is to share with our students some of the cultural aspects of the area. A good place to start is with place names. Puaena Point translates into “hot flower”. Pua = flower and ena = hot. Kahalewai translates in to “the house that holds the water”. Ka = the, hale = house and wai = water. We find that by learning the Hawaiian names and meanings of places helps our surf students gain a deeper appreciation for the sport of surfing and we hope a love of the beautiful Hawaiian culture that has given it to us.
