Surfer Girls especially those who teach surfing lessons every day in Hawaii, have special challenges when it comes to having nice hair. While the sun does it’s job and bleaches it blond it also dries it out beyond belief! On top of that the salt water and pull from the waves create added stress that would cause a super model to throw a cell phone at anyone. So what’s a surfer girl to do? After 20 plus years of surfing and teaching surfing and always looking like I had just stepped out of the ocean I decided to consult an expert – Emilia Perry. She’s a true North Shore Surfer Girl, Pipe charger on both a surfboard and bodyboard, a model and hair dresser at Salon Atlantis in the Haleiwa Market place – this is what she suggested.
1. Put coconut oil in your just before getting in to the surf -this is actually an ancient Hawaiian custom.
2. Wash with super good conditioner – I use a product made my Goldwell, it’s expensive but worth it.
3. Braid your hair before going in to the water.
4. See a professional at least once every 3 months for a trim,
If you follow this advice consistently your hair condition will improve and that’s that!
There is an old saying; “the secret to happiness is to find something you love and make it your profession”. Well I love surfing and I love teaching. When I started the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School, I designed it to match the surfer lifestyle – in other words to fit in with what matters most – being in the water and catching waves. Some pleasant surprises happened along the way; sharing the joy of surfing with people while helping to make them more in tune with the environment tops the list. Also adopting the beaches we teach surfing at; who knew that keeping a beach clean could feel so good. Learning more about our Hawaiian culture and passing it on to my surf students – way neat! Getting much better at bodysurfing – always an item on my bucket list. Working close to home – the best! Love, love this life of teaching people how to surf!
The North Shore Surf Girls offer surfing lessons daily at 9:00 AM 12:00 AM and 3:00 PM – But what is the best time of day to take a surf lesson? The answer to this question depends upon the location of the surf lesson, the size of the waves and the tide. If the swell is big on the outside, we teach in a cove protected from the larger waves, then it’s better to get a lesson on low tide. If it’s in the middle of the Summer when the waves are small low tide is also good. However, if the waves are medium size then any tide will do.
The other factor in the best time of day to learn to surf is the sun and wind. the sun is kindest in the mornings and afternoons and the wind is always the most gentle in the mornings.
According to the latest Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index numbers, people living in Hawaii are the happiest people in the nation. While the index measures many things, the one unique thing we have in Hawaii — and especially the North Shore — is GREAT SURF. Where else in the country can you learn to surf in warm, clean water with sea turtles swimming all around you? Learning to surf changed will change your life; it will bring you peace and a sense of satisfaction with the moment. Yes, surfing truly does add to one’s quality of life – beyond measure.
Surfing lessons this Summer at Chun’s Reef on the North Shore of Oahu have been very good, thanks to a multitude of southwest and trade-wind swells wrapping around the coast. Now it’s the middle of August and children and young people are returning to school. The start of the winter surf season is only a month away! The pulse of the North Shore is starting to beat harder. People wanting to learn to surf in Hawaii will have to decide: “Should I try to learn to surf on the North Shore in the winter? Is it safe enough?”
The answer is an emphatic “Yes!” You will find that learning to surf on the North Shore in both summer and winter is easier than in Waikiki; the beaches and the waves are much less crowded. Chun’s Reef surf spot on the North Shore is perfect in the summer. In the winter months we teach you to surf on the North Shore in a cove protected from the larger waves. Actually the waves at this protected cove are pretty good — much, much better than what you’ll find at Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. If you need to check surfing off on your Bucket List – now’s the time!
Although most people think of Waikiki and surfing lessons, learning to surf in Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu in the Summer is a much better choice. The North Shore has cleaner water then Waikiki surf, no stinging jelly fish, no crowds and 1-2 foot waves everyday! In the Winter months of course it’s a different story – but then we teach you in a cove protected from the big North Shore surf. Either way Summer or Winter learning to surf on the North Shore blows away surfing lessons in Waikiki, plus you get beautiful sunsets and free parking!
– this is an unofficial holiday that celebrates the sport of surfing, the surfing lifestyle and protecting our marine resources. It’s a great day to take your first surfing lesson and learn how to surf in Hawaii!
