How To Be Kind to Our Reefs on the North Shore of Oahu When Surfing or Swiming

By |March 25th, 2013|Environmental Concerns, How To Be Kind to Our Reefs on the North Shore of Oahu When Surfing or Swiming, Surf Happenings|0 Comments

All the underwater reefs in the world are endangered from many things, including human beings walking on them. So when you take a surfing lesson, go swimming or for a free surf, don’t wear reef shoes. Besides making it hard to; balance on your surfboard and swim, they not only make you look like a kook, (surfer slang for very uncool) reef shoes crush the reef when you walk on ocean floor with them. It’s much healthier for our friends in the ocean for humans to not touch the reef at all.

Gerry Lopez and Rory Russel Surfing in the 1970's in Bali

By |March 22nd, 2013|Gerry Lopez and Rory Russel Surfing in the 1970's in Bali, Surf Happenings|0 Comments

Gerry Lopez and Rory Russel are some of the North Shore’s most legendary surfers.  They both blew minds surfing Pipeline, especially in the early 70’s.  Both men are still involved in the surfing world, with Gerry teaching at a recent yoga convention at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore and Rory attending Andy Iron’s funeral on Kauai two years ago.  I saw this video below posted on Face Book by Derrick Doerner (Another North Shore Surfing Legend) and had to share it here.

Things The North Shore Surf Girls Love the Most About Teaching People How to Surf

By |March 20th, 2013|Surf Happenings, Things The North Shore Surf Girls Love the Most About Teaching People How to Surf|0 Comments

There are many things the North Shore Surf Girls love about teaching people to surf, some of our favorites include teaching people with special needs and teaching young children.  Teaching people with special needs especially children is very rewarding and near and dear to our hearts because in part one of our nephews is a special needs guy. Last Summer we taught him to surf and you can imagine the delight he found.  Now his goal in life is to master surfing.  Young children are also among our favorites simply because they are so adorable standing up on a surfboard as they learn to surf for the first time.

Matsumoto’s Shave Ice is the most popular place to eat shave ice on the North Shore especially after a surfing lesson.  Another favorite and equally as good is Aoki’s Shave Ice.  Sadly however Aoki’s shave ice is is slated to be torn down in a few short weeks to make way for a new shopping center.

How To Tan and Not Damage Your Skin While Surfing on the North Shore.

By |March 18th, 2013|Environmental Concerns, How To Tan and Not Damage Your Skin While Surfing on the North Shore.|0 Comments

The best way to tan and not damage your skin is to us a fake bronzing lotion.  When you tan your skin with the sun while surfing or pay money for  a sun lamp you are damaging your skin.  The best solution is to be happy with the color of skin your parents gave you and focus on eating good foods and exercising.

How Imprtant Is It To Be A Good Swimmer When Learning To Surf?

By |March 16th, 2013|How Imprtant Is It To Be A Good Swimmer When Learning To Surf?, Surf Happenings|0 Comments

Back in the old days 1970’s even beginner surfers had to be excellent swimmers because the surfboard leash had not been invented.  Duke Kahanamoku, the Grandfather of modern surfing won 5 Olympic gold medals in swimming because he swam a lot chasing his board down after loosing it surfing in Waikiki. Now days most beginner surfers and even expert surfers rely on a leash attached to their surfboards so that after a fall or wipeout they don’t have to swim to the beach to collect their surfboard which usually got washed to shore by a wave.  This has created generations of surfers who have simply spent most of there time in the water on a surfboard rather then swimming to shore like Duke Kahanamoku did for so many years surfing in Waikiki.  The result is that over all most surfers don’t swim as good as they used to and probably none as good as the Duke.  This is a problem too for our sport of surfing which also has a deeper tradition of being a waterman/women which implies that one is good in all aspects of ocean sports most especially swimming.  Although I’ve not answered the question “How important is […]

How Many Surfing Lessons Does It Take To Learn How To Surf?

By |March 15th, 2013|How Many Surfing Lessons Does It Take To Learn How To Surf?|1 Comment

If a person is fit and motivated the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School can teach you to surf in one surfing  lesson. Most people however, take about three surfing lessons to learn to surf. It should be noted too that truly learning to surf is a life long pursuit, however if you can catch a wave by your self then you have learned the basic and much needed first step. To become an expert  at surfing you have to spend hundreds if not thousands of hours surfing in the ocean. Besides learning to catch waves you also have to learn about the ocean; currents, sets, and so much more. This takes years and while it can be explained one really needs to experience it first hand to really “get it”.
