Choose the right equipment:

Select a surfboard, leash, and wetsuit suitable for your size and skill level. Ensure a proper fit and comfort. It’s important to note that these length and volume ranges can vary based on factors such as a surfer’s skill level, weight, and wave conditions. Beginning surfers often consult with surf instructors, local shapers or surf shop experts to determine the most appropriate board length for their specific needs.

Learn the basics:

Familiarize yourself with essential techniques such as paddling, popping up, and riding waves. Consider taking beginner’s surf lessons to learn these fundamentals from qualified instructors.

Start in small waves:

Begin your surfing journey in smaller waves appropriate for your skill level. Practice paddling and popping up on the board in the white water before attempting to catch an actual breaking wave. Small waves generally have slower speeds and less power compared to larger waves. This provides a safer environment for beginners to learn and practice surfing without facing the risk of being overwhelmed by strong currents or powerful waves.

Puaena Point is the Best Place on Oahu to Learn to Surf

By |November 23rd, 2018|Uncategorized|0 Comments

Puaena Point on the North Shore of Oahu offers the best waves for learning to surf.  The North Shore Surf Girls teach surfing lessons daily at this location from October to May each year.  While you can find us here, it’s always best to make a reservation ahead of time, either by calling 1-808-637-2977 or by booking a lesson online.

The North Shore Surf Girls love teaching surfing lessons at Puaena Point for many reasons.  It is a protected cove and safe from the big waves the North Shore of Oahu is known for in our winter months.  Puaena Point is a long gentle breaking wave.  The ride ends in a peaceful pool of water and is known for green sea turtle’s swimming all around you while you learn to surf.  Puaena Point, located at the end of Kahalewai Place on the North East end of Haleiwa Regional Beach Park, offers parking and a public restroom with showers.

How Many Surfing Lessons Does It Take To Learn How To Surf?

By |March 15th, 2013|How Many Surfing Lessons Does It Take To Learn How To Surf?|1 Comment

If a person is fit and motivated the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School can teach you to surf in one surfing  lesson. Most people however, take about three surfing lessons to learn to surf. It should be noted too that truly learning to surf is a life long pursuit, however if you can catch a wave by your self then you have learned the basic and much needed first step. To become an expert  at surfing you have to spend hundreds if not thousands of hours surfing in the ocean. Besides learning to catch waves you also have to learn about the ocean; currents, sets, and so much more. This takes years and while it can be explained one really needs to experience it first hand to really “get it”.
