North Shore of Oahu

The North Shore of Oahu is a world-renowned surfing destination located on the northern coast of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The area is famous for its big waves, which attract surfers from all over the world.

During the winter months (November to February), the North Shore experiences massive swells that can reach heights of up to 30 feet. These swells create some of the most challenging and iconic surf breaks in the world, including Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay. Don’t worry though, we teach our surf lessons in a protected cove away safe from the bigger waves!

In addition to surfing, the North Shore offers many other activities and attractions. The area is home to several beautiful beaches, including Haleiwa Beach Park, Waimea Bay Beach, and Sunset Beach. Visitors can also explore the town of Haleiwa, which offers a variety of shops, restaurants, and galleries.

The North Shore is also known for its vibrant surf culture and laid-back atmosphere. Visitors can experience this culture by attending surf competitions, such as the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which takes place annually on the North Shore.

World Surf League Adds Women’s Professional Surfing Contest to North Shore Schedule, then Cancels it!

By |January 10th, 2021|Uncategorized|0 Comments

The World Surf League stoked out women professional surfers by returning them to completion at Sunset Set Beach on the North Shore of Oahu but then the State of Hawaii cancelled the event due to Covid-19. Read the World Surf Leagues statement here. Everyone was so stoked! Finally, after 10 years of no world championship events for women surfers, the World Surf League decide to follow the law, siting legislation that the City and County of Honolulu government had announced that a women’s event was added to the schedule. The Sunset Open was to have equal prize money too although not an equal number of competitors. The World Surf League still has a long way to go on that number. There are 18 women allowed to compete in World Championship events compared to 38 men that are allowed to compete in men’s events on sanctioned by the World Surf League. While we greatly applaud the amazing and historic strides the World Surf League has made recently with gender equality there is still work to be done to create equality.

Red Bull Queen of the Bay big wave contest planned for October is canceled with an interim virtual big-wave video contest in development for the winter.

Now, Red Bull looks forward to 2021 to bring the esteemed event back to Hawaii and, in the interim, producing a Hawaii-focused big-wave video contest this winter in the spirit of providing opportunity.

“We’ve been closely monitoring health updates globally and–while we had hoped to be able to bring Red Bull Queen of The Bay to life this year, 2020 had other plans for us,” Betty Depolito, contest director, said about the cancellation. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to bring the original vision of Red Bull Queen of The Bay–giving the top women’s big-wave surfers a […]

Life on the North Shore of Oahu During the Corona Virus Pandemic

By |April 11th, 2020|Uncategorized|0 Comments

Amazing life on the North Shore in some ways is better than ever. We are allowed to surf, but there is no traffic. It feels like I’m living back in the 1970s when one car and hour would drive down lonely Kamehameha Hwy. North Shore surfers once again rule the Laniakea parking lot as there are no visitors allowed on the island.

A DRIVE ON THE NORTH SHORE WHEN THE COVID-19 QUARANTINE FIRST STARTED

Along with no traffic, there is almost no economy. Most businesses have shuttered their doors, even Matsumomoto’s famous shave ice stand closed. The outlook is dire as current projections have Hawaii not being open to visitors for up to 18 months.

Still, if you’re a hardcore surfer, life could not be better. We may have to go back to living off packaged noodles, but the waves keep crashing, at least for now. Summer is just around the corner, and the thought of enduring months of super small waves and long hot days has me a little depressed.

One odd part of the quarantine is that you can’t sit on the beach and rest. You always have to be moving, […]

North Shore Oahu Surf Contest Calendar

By |October 2nd, 2015|Uncategorized|0 Comments

North Shore Oahu Surf Contest Calendar
The North Shore of Oahu is the world’s mecca when it comes to surfing contest, so it’s strange that as of this blog writing there is no set calendar.  The North Shore of Oahu host the Triple Crown of Surfing, which includes the Pipe Master’s.  The North Shore is also home to the Quick Silver in Memory of Eddie Aikau.  The reason is that the Park Department in City and County of Honolulu decides which organizations get to run contest during the winter surf season on the North Shore of Oahu. This process of deciding who gets to the contest is hotly contested and frequently ends up in court.  A solution would be to issue multi year North Shore Oahu surf contest calendars so that athletes, sponsors, visitors and community members can better plan for it.  Another problem with this last minute issuing of the annual North Shore Oahu Surf Contest Calendar is that women surfers get less then 10% of the surf contest time. This lack of gender equality is a real problem for the development of surfing.  It’s also very unfair to the professional women surfers in the world.  Mostly it hurts Hawaii’s […]

It’s Been an Amazing Ride Living on the North Shore of Oahu!

By |January 3rd, 2015|Surf Happenings, Uncategorized|2 Comments

Paddling out today on my way to work, I thought, wow who would have thunk 40 plus years later I’d still be living the dream on the North Shore of Oahu?  I tried to remember the first time I swam in her beautiful waters. I remember the first time I looked under the water at Waimea Bay with a mask, I freaked out and ran out of the water, blown away because it was so vast under the sea. I must have been 5 or 6 years old at the time and never would have dreamed of paddle out to the point to challenge myself in the waves. I remember Steve Albert, who still runs Rainbow school taking us students on field trips to bodysurf the shore break at Waimea and to swim through the secret tunnels of Sharks Cove. I remember riding The Bus from Kahaluu to Waialua to ride horses as a teenager and staring at the huge waves of Waimea memorized if only for a few seconds as we rode around the Bay in pre-traffic North Shore…..I remember my first time bottom turning at Pipeline….wow that was a cool day! So now so many, many years later […]

What to expect in a Surfing Lesson with the North Shore Surf Girls Surfing School

By |November 27th, 2014|Thoughts on Surfing|0 Comments

Surfing is more than just a sport. It creates perfect harmony for body, mind and spirit with nature. Floating on your board with your legs in the clear blue water and the warm sun on your back, your only thought is about the next wave. When it comes you feel a rush of adrenaline as you are pushed forward by the force of the ocean and triumphantly stand up on your board to ride the wave. You can’t help but smile.

Your first lesson is usually accompanied by some nervousness of the unknown. “Can I do this? Will I be able to stand up? What if I fall?” That’s why an experienced dedicated instructor is key to making your surf experience delightful. With full interactive instruction and coaching on land about the best surf technique, local expertise on the waves and currents, safety review and lots of time for questions, you will enter the water with confidence.

At the end of your lesson your body will be tired but your spirit will be energized and your mind clear. You will soon discover that surfing is like Hawaii. Absolute bliss in paradise.
