Summer time is almost here and the North Shore of Oahu’s famous huge waves are going to sleep as the Winter moves to the Southern hemisphere. Not to worry though the North Shore is blessed with trade winds that generate a wind swell that provides beginner surf students with the perfect size waves to learn to surf in. (Note in the Winter when it’s big we teach surfing lessons in a cove protected from the larger surf). While a surf lesson is a must do on the North Shore, there are many other fun activities to enjoy as well. For starters there are miles of beautiful white sandy beaches to explore which in the Summer are perfect for snorkeling, sea shell collecting and turtle viewing. Feel free to ask one of your surf instructors after your surf lesson for suggestions and directions to some of our secret off the beaten path beaches.
For the more adventuress type you can go on a shark tour , deep sea fishing or take a sunset cruise all out of Haleiwa Harbor. The Harbor is located on the North-East End of the town and is easy too find. If your super brave or just wanting to cross an item off your bucket list you can go skydiving at Dillingham Airfield – We recommend Sky Dive Hawaii. The airfield is located 20 minutes West of Haleiwa Town on Farrington Hwy., and also offers glider rides for those of us with a milder sense of adventure.
A visit to the North Shore is not complete without a trip to the world renowned Waimea Falls Park. Located just 10 minutes from Haleiwa Town, Waimea Falls Park is one of the top 8 botanical collections in the world. For the $15 admission you gain access to an ancient Hawaiian valley and a waterfall unique tot the island of Oahu. After a picturesque 20 minute walk on a paved road you will find a beautiful water fall and a large swimming hole. Lifeguards on duty offer free life jackets and boogie boards to use. Don’t forget a camera, sunscreen, bathing suites, towels and water to drink. To really make a day of it bring a picnic lunch and eat it at the waterfall.
If you enjoy Mai Tais and beautiful sunsets, the pool bar at Turtle Bay Hotel is a must do. The friendly bartenders serve up delicious Mai Tais and other drinks while you watch surfers literally surfing into the sunset. It’s a great end to a fun day on the North Shore and is popular with the locals too. With all of that said don’t forget to take a surfing lesson with the North Shore Surf Girls we love what we do and we love sharing the North Shore with our surf students.
