Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours before your lesson start time for a full refund or free reschedule. If North Shore Surf Girls cancels due to surf or weather conditions, you choose: a full refund, a free reschedule to any future date, or a North Shore Surf Girls gift card. No-shows are non-refundable, but we can usually reschedule with advance notice — even inside the 24-hour window — so please call or text us the moment you know. Late arrivals are accommodated to the best of our ability, especially when traffic is the cause.
A tandem surf lesson at North Shore Surf Girls is a private experience where the certified instructor rides the same surfboard as the student — paddling, choosing the wave, and steering — while the student stays in front. It’s the safest, most confidence-building introduction to surfing for young children.
The Tandem Special is a 1-hour private surf lesson with one of our tandem specialists, starting at $159.95 per child. Each booking includes one certified instructor, a soft-top tandem surfboard, a rash guard, and a leash. We meet in Haleʻiwa on Oʻahu’s North Shore.
Tandem lessons are best for ages 2 through 6, but we welcome older children, anxious first-timers, and adults with mobility or balance concerns who want the security of an instructor on the board with them. There is no minimum swimming ability required because the instructor controls the board the entire time.
Yes. Every tandem student wears a properly fitted leash and rash guard, and the certified instructor stays on the board with the student in shallow, beginner-friendly water at Puaena Point or Chunʻs Reef. Parents are welcome to watch from the beach the entire session.
We meet at Puaena Point or Chunʻs Reef in Haleʻiwa on Oʻahu’s North Shore — both are gentle, beginner-friendly breaks with slow-rolling waves perfect for tandem surfing. Your instructor selects the exact spot each day based on conditions.
A tandem lesson is structured as one student plus one instructor. If you’d like the parent in the water too, book a Family Private Surf Lesson — it includes a 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio with tandem boards available for young keiki at no extra charge, so the whole family can ride together.
