Every family booking runs at a maximum 3-students-to-1-instructor ratio — better than our group lesson’s 4:1 — so younger keiki get more attention while older siblings and parents progress faster.
What ages can join a family surf lesson?
Family surf lessons welcome ages 2 and up — with no upper age limit. We’ve taught grandparents, parents, teenagers, and toddlers in the same session. Younger keiki ride tandem with a certified instructor on the same board; older family members ride their own beginner-friendly soft-top surfboards.
What's the minimum group size for a family surf lesson?
A family surf lesson at North Shore Surf Girls requires a minimum of 3 family members to book, with a maximum 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio. Smaller families of 1–2 people should book a private or semi-private surf lesson instead.
Where are family surf lessons held?
Family surf lessons are held at two beginner-friendly breaks on Oʻahu’s North Shore — Puaena Point in Haleʻiwa and Chunʻs Reef, also in Haleʻiwa. Both have soft, slow-rolling waves and sandy entry points perfect for first-time family surfers.
What if some family members aren't strong swimmers or are very young?
We tailor every family surf lesson to mixed ability levels. Tandem instructors are available for young children — the instructor rides the board with the child to keep them safe and confident. For grandparents or less-athletic family members, your instructor will adjust the pace, board choice, and water time so everyone enjoys the session at their own comfort level. Tell us at booking and we’ll match each person to the right experience.

A family surf lesson at North Shore Surf Girls is a private booking exclusively for your family or party at a 3:1 ratio — ideal for families and parties of 3+ who want a more exclusive North Shore surf experience. A group surf lesson (4:1 ratio, $65/person) mixes you with other students at a lower per-person price. A private or semi-private lesson is best for 1–2 people who want even tighter coaching.

Every family surf lesson at North Shore Surf Girls includes certified local instructors at a 3:1 ratio, soft-top surfboards sized to each family member, rash guards, and leashes.
