Frequently Asked Questions about Surf Lessons on Oʻahu’s North Shore

Who are North Shore Surf Girls lessons for?

Our surf lessons are for everyone — men, women, couples, families with kids ages 2 and up, corporate groups, beginners, and advanced surfers. North Shore Surf Girls was founded by women in 2005, and that female-led story is part of our identity, but our students are mixed: roughly half are men, and many bookings are couples, multi-generational families, and corporate retreats. The “Girls” in our name reflects our founder story, not our audience. Read more about North Shore Surf Girls.

Which North Shore surf lesson should I book — group, private, family, or turtle tour?

Group surf lessons are best for groups of 3 or more — friends, families, coworkers, or travel parties — who want a budget-friendly shared North Shore experience.

Private and semi-private lessons are ideal for solo travelers, couples, focused beginners, individuals with special needs, adaptive surfers, and anyone who wants dedicated 1:1 coaching at their own pace.

The 2-hour Family Private lesson is built for parents and kids surfing together, with extra time for younger surfers to find their feet.

The 3-hour Surf & Turtle Tour combines a beginner surf lesson with a guided green sea turtle viewing on a quiet North Shore beach — a top pick for families and groups looking for a single wow-factor Oʻahu experience.

How much do surf lessons on Oʻahu’s North Shore cost?

Our standard 1-hour lesson rates start at $65.95 per person for group lessons and $119.95 for private and semi-private lessons. The 2-hour Family Private lesson is $115.95 per person, and the 3-hour Surf & Turtle Tour is $189 per person.

1.5-hour and 2-hour upgrades are available for group and private lessons at higher rates — see each lesson page for full pricing. Every lesson includes a Surftech surfboard, leash, Lycra rashguard, and a Red Cross CPR- and lifeguard-certified instructor.

Can complete beginners learn to surf on Oʻahu’s North Shore?

Yes — first-time surfers are our specialty. Oʻahu’s North Shore is famous for big winter waves at world-class breaks like Pipeline and Sunset (those are reserved for advanced surfers and pros), but we teach beginners year-round at two carefully chosen breaks that flip with the seasons.

Puaʻena Point is a naturally protected cove just outside Haleʻiwa Harbor. In winter (November–March), when the rest of the North Shore is firing with overhead swells, Puaʻena’s headland blocks the biggest waves and keeps the inside lineup small and rideable — making it our go-to winter surf lesson break for beginners, families, and kids.

Chun’s Reef comes alive in the summer months (April–October), when North Shore swells drop and most outer breaks go flat. Long, gentle, perfectly shaped right-handers roll across the inside reef — ideal small beginner waves for first-time surfers and the best summer learn-to-surf spot on the North Shore.

Every lesson begins with a land-based safety briefing, then in-water coaching at whichever break is best that morning. Most students stand up and ride a wave on their first lesson. See our surf lesson locations.

Do I need to know how to swim before my surf lesson?

Students must be comfortable in waist-deep water and able to follow basic safety instructions. Strong swimming ability is not required for our beginner lessons because you stay leashed to a buoyant surfboard at all times in shallow, sandy-bottom breaks.

Coast Guard–approved life jackets and personal flotation devices (PFDs) are provided at no extra charge — especially recommended for small children, toddlers, non-swimmers, and nervous first-timers who want extra buoyancy and peace of mind. Our instructors fit each life jacket before entering the water and stay within arm’s reach of younger surfers throughout the lesson.

Children ages 2 and up are welcome with a parent in the water for our family lessons. If you have any concerns about water comfort, mention it when booking and we’ll match you with the right instructor and gear.

What is North Shore Surf Girls’ cancellation and weather policy?

Full refund with 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable but can be rescheduled when possible. If we cancel due to unsafe surf, weather, or ocean conditions, you’ll be offered a reschedule or a full refund — your choice. We monitor North Shore conditions every morning and contact you directly if your lesson needs to move. Lessons run rain or shine when the ocean is safe.

See our full cancellation & refund policy for details on Sunset BBQ, group bookings, gift cards, no-shows, and rescheduling.
