Last updated: May 17, 2026. With more than 500 verified 5-star Google reviews from students worldwide, NSSG is Oʻahu’s most-reviewed women-led surf school. We teach at two North Shore locations — Puaʻena Point in Haleʻiwa and Chun’s Reef — and our certified instructors choose between them each morning based on which spot offers the safest, most beginner-friendly conditions. Before your lesson, check the NOAA North Shore surf forecast — the same source we use to plan each session.
Our women’s surf lesson program is taught in the spirit of Carol Philips, founder of North Shore Surf Girls and the first woman to compete at Banzai Pipeline (1986).
Women's Surf Lesson FAQs
What is your cancellation and weather policy?
Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours before your lesson start time for a full refund or free reschedule. If North Shore Surf Girls cancels due to surf or weather conditions, you choose: a full refund, a free reschedule to any future date, or a North Shore Surf Girls gift card. No-shows are non-refundable, but we can usually reschedule with advance notice — even inside the 24-hour window — so please call or text us the moment you know. Late arrivals are accommodated to the best of our ability, especially when traffic is the cause.
How much do women's surf lessons cost and how long are they?
Women’s surf lessons at North Shore Surf Girls are offered in four formats. Group lessons run 2 hours and cost $65.95–$89.95 per person. Private and semi-private lessons run 1, 1.5, or 2 hours and cost $119.95–$225.95 depending on length and ratio. The 2-hour Private Group lesson (for friends booking together) is $115.95 per person. All gear is included — board, leash, and rash guard. Lessons run daily at 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 3:00 PM at Puaena Point in Haleʻiwa.
Who are women's surf lessons for?
Our women’s surf lessons welcome mothers and daughters, sisters, solo travelers, bachelorette and girlfriend groups, women’s retreats, women returning to the ocean after a long break, and complete beginners. If you’ve ever felt intimidated walking into a surf shop or paddling into a crowded lineup, these lessons are designed for you. The environment is calm, supportive, and pressure-free — and many first-time surfers stand up on their first or second wave.
Why do women learn surfing faster with a female instructor?
Many women feel more comfortable taking their first surf lesson alongside another woman. Our female instructors understand the questions first-time surfers actually ask — about board fit, balance, body position, fitness, and reading the ocean — and they teach with patience, encouragement, and zero pressure. The result: more confidence, faster progress, and a lifelong love of the water.
What's the minimum age for a women's surf lesson?
There is no strict minimum age — keiki as young as 8 can join a Group women’s lesson, and younger children are welcome in Private or Family formats where the instructor can tailor the pace and board size to the child. There is no upper age limit. We regularly teach grandmothers, mothers, and daughters in the same session.
What's included in a women's surf lesson?
Every women’s surf lesson includes a certified female instructor, a high-quality Surftech soft-top surfboard sized to your skill level, a rash guard, and a leash. Beach time covers pop-up technique, paddling form, ocean awareness, and surf etiquette. Water time is spent with the instructor right beside you in calm white-water, coaching your timing and pop-up. Action photos are available on request for an additional fee. No experience or fitness level is required.
Where are women's surf lessons held?
Women’s surf lessons take place at Puaena Point Beach Park and Chun’s Reef in Haleʻiwa, on Oʻahu’s North Shore. Both locations offer gentle, rolling beginner waves that break over sandy bottoms — ideal for learning in a safe, supportive environment. Puaena Point is just a 5-minute drive from Haleʻiwa Town, and both spots are about 1 hour 20 minutes from Waikīkī, 45 minutes from Ko Olina, and 30 minutes from the Ritz-Carlton Turtle Bay. Free parking, restrooms, and outdoor showers are available at or near each location.
What happens during a first women's surf lesson?
Your lesson has three parts. (1) Land lesson on the beach (about 15 minutes): pop-up technique, paddling form, ocean awareness, and surf etiquette on a beach board. (2) Paddle out together (about 10 minutes): your instructor carries the boards and stays right beside you. (3) Catch your first wave (60+ minutes): your instructor pushes you into beginner waves, calls the timing, and coaches your pop-up. Most women stand up on their first or second wave.
How do I book a women's surf lesson?
Book online directly on this page (the ‘Book a Lesson’ buttons go to our live availability system), or call/text us at 808-637-2977. We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance, especially during December–March and June–August peak seasons. Same-day bookings are sometimes possible — call to check.
