Our Ethics & Values

At North Shore Surf Girls, everything we do is grounded in respect—for the ocean, for the land, and for the community that makes the North Shore of Oʻahu so special. As a trusted provider of North Shore Oʻahu surf lessons, we are a female-founded, family-owned surf school based in Haleʻiwa since 2005, committed to teaching surfing in a way that is safe, responsible, and aligned with the values of this place we call home.

Ocean Safety Comes First

Safety is the foundation of every lesson we teach. All of our instructors are Red Cross CPR and Lifeguard certified, and we carefully match each session to the student’s experience level and ocean conditions. We prioritize conservative, beginner-friendly environments and maintain attentive instructor-to-student ratios to ensure awareness in the water. Beyond learning to stand up, our students gain an understanding of how to read the ocean, respect currents, and make safe decisions in ever-changing conditions. This approach ensures our  surf lessons in Haleʻiwa are both safe and enjoyable for every student.

Respect for Culture and Community

We operate in Haleʻiwa with deep respect for the history, culture, and people of the North Shore. Surfing here is more than a sport—it is part of a living culture. We teach proper etiquette in the lineup and encourage our students to approach the ocean and those around them with humility and awareness. As a local business, we are committed to contributing positively to the community by supporting local partnerships, respecting neighborhoods, and honoring the traditions that make this coastline unique.

Environmental Stewardship

The ocean gives us everything, and we believe in protecting it. We encourage the use of reef-safe sunscreen, minimize single-use plastics during our lessons, and educate our students on how to interact responsibly with marine life, including sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals. Our goal is simple: to leave every beach, every wave, and every experience better than we found it.

Inclusion, Empowerment & Aloha

North Shore Surf Girls was founded to create space in the lineup, and that spirit continues in every lesson we offer. We welcome students of all ages, backgrounds, and ability levels. Our beginner surf lessons on the North Shore are designed to build confidence in a supportive environment.. Whether it is your first time in the ocean or you are building confidence in your skills, our approach is rooted in patience, positivity, and aloha. We take pride in being a female-founded business and in helping every student feel comfortable, capable, and inspired.

Commitment to Integrity

We believe in clear communication, honest expectations, and delivering experiences that reflect the highest standards of professionalism. From your first inquiry to your time in the water, our goal is to provide a safe, memorable, and meaningful connection to surfing on the North Shore. We stand behind the quality of our instruction and the care we provide to every student.

These ethics are rooted in the values of our founder, Carol Philips — surfer, community leader, and President of the North Shore Chamber of Commerce.
