How Many Surf Lessons Does It Take to Learn to Surf?

How many surf lessons it takes depends very much on your fitness level and how much you want it. Some people learn to surf in one lesson, and many take about three.

We have been teaching beginners on Oʻahu’s North Shore since 2005, and no two students learn at the same pace. Nobody can honestly promise how quickly you will stand up, but we can tell you what usually makes the difference.

Can you learn to surf in one lesson?

Some people do. A student who is fit and motivated can learn to surf in a single lesson with us. Many people take about three surf lessons, and some take more. All of those are normal.

Every lesson begins with a land lesson on the beach, roughly 15 to 30 minutes depending on group size and past experience, before anyone paddles out.

What does “learning to surf” actually mean?

For a beginner, the goal is simple: catching a wave by yourself. If you can do that, you have learned the basic and much-needed first step.

That first step is where surfing starts, not where it finishes. Truly learning to surf is a lifelong pursuit.

Does being fit help you learn to surf faster?

Yes. Fitness helps a lot, and so does desire. The students who pick surfing up quickly tend to arrive in decent shape and really want to learn.

Our post on how to prepare for a surf lesson covers getting ready before you arrive.

Plenty of people learn without being athletes. We adapt lessons for age, ability, and confidence, and we teach everyone: men, women, couples, families, and kids.

How long does it take to become a good surfer?

Much longer than a vacation. To become an expert at surfing, you have to spend hundreds if not thousands of hours surfing in the ocean.

Besides learning to catch waves, you also have to learn about the ocean: currents, sets, and so much more. Learning the ocean takes years. It can be explained, but you really need to experience it first-hand to “get it.”

How many surf lessons should you book?

One lesson is a fine place to start. If you have more days on Oʻahu and want a better chance of catching waves on your own, more lessons simply means more time in the ocean, and time in the ocean is what teaches you.

Our private and semi-private surf lessons and group surf lessons are both open to first-timers. On every lesson, your instructor is an American Red Cross certified lifeguard who acts as the in-water lifeguard for their own students.
