Must Know Surfing Tips!

Choose the right equipment:

Select a surfboard, leash, and wetsuit suitable for your size and skill level. Ensure a proper fit and comfort. It’s important to note that these length and volume ranges can vary based on factors such as a surfer’s skill level, weight, and wave conditions. Beginning surfers often consult with surf instructors, local shapers or surf shop experts to determine the most appropriate board length for their specific needs.

Learn the basics:

Familiarize yourself with essential techniques such as paddling, popping up, and riding waves. Consider taking beginner’s surf lessons to learn these fundamentals from qualified instructors.

Start in small waves:

Begin your surfing journey in smaller waves appropriate for your skill level. Practice paddling and popping up on the board in the white water before attempting to catch an actual breaking wave. Small waves generally have slower speeds and less power compared to larger waves. This provides a safer environment for beginners to learn and practice surfing without facing the risk of being overwhelmed by strong currents or powerful waves.

Prioritize safety:

Always surf with a buddy and stay within your limits. Be aware of potential hazards like rocks or strong currents. Respect fellow surfers and adhere to beach rules. Additionally, protect […]

World Surf League Adds Women’s Professional Surfing Contest to North Shore Schedule, then Cancels it!

By |January 10th, 2021|Uncategorized|0 Comments

The World Surf League stoked out women professional surfers by returning them to completion at Sunset Set Beach on the North Shore of Oahu but then the State of Hawaii cancelled the event due to Covid-19. Read the World Surf Leagues statement here. Everyone was so stoked! Finally, after 10 years of no world championship events for women surfers, the World Surf League decide to follow the law, siting legislation that the City and County of Honolulu government had announced that a women’s event was added to the schedule. The Sunset Open was to have equal prize money too although not an equal number of competitors. The World Surf League still has a long way to go on that number. There are 18 women allowed to compete in World Championship events compared to 38 men that are allowed to compete in men’s events on sanctioned by the World Surf League. While we greatly applaud the amazing and historic strides the World Surf League has made recently with gender equality there is still work to be done to create equality.

On the men’s side of the tour the Billabong Pipe Masters, held on the North Shore of Oahu has always ended their side of the tour, now this event will also be the first event of 2021. The bigger news is the WSL has upgraded its Sunset Open event to a World Championship event and added a women’s division. If that was not enough, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing has gone digital for the first time with eligible competitors submitting videos of their two best waves each from Sunset, Haleiwa, and Pipeline for judging consideration. It has also been confirmed that there will be both a men’s and women’s division in this digital Triple Crown of Surfing. This will be the […]
