Sunscreens that are Safe for Reefs

By |May 18th, 2017|How To Do Things Related to Surfing|0 Comments

Sunscreens that are Safe for Reefs
The short answer is to make sure that your sunscreen DOESN”T contain oxybenzone, butylparaben, octinoxate and 4-methylbenzylidine camphor.  Personally I like products with zinc in them and have found the very best sunscreen is covering up.

Training for Big Wave Surfing

By |May 15th, 2017|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

How to train for surfing big waves….There are  3 parts to training to big wave surfing.  The first is ocean and wave knowledge; understanding currents, tides and the waves themselves.  This kind of knowledge is usually learned by spending many hours and years in the ocean.  The second element in training to surf big waves is physical conditioning, this includes both strength and cardio; both of which require basic hard work and commitment.  The third element is psychological so that you don’t panic.  You have to learn how to take your fear out of your frontal lob, look at it acknowledge it and then put it on a shelf in the back of your mind so that you can focus on what you need to do to stay alive in big waves….

First Ever Big Wave Surfing Contest For Women

By |October 3rd, 2016|Uncategorized|0 Comments

The World Surf League took a gigantic step towards gender equality in announcing that it will include a single women’s professional big wave contest this surf season. Big wave surfing in recent years has seen a huge surge in women surfers charging waves over 20 feet Hawaiian. Following in the footsteps of unheralded hero’s like Phylis Dameron who charged gigantic Waimea Bay in the 70’s and 80’s on a 39 inch piece of foam also know as a bodyboard, today’s young ladies charge hard on modern surfboards and are growing in number each season.

Gender Equality In Surfing, Should Women Compete Against Men and Is It OK For Alana Blanchard to Cash – in On Her Body?

By |September 27th, 2016|Musings|0 Comments

Gender equality in surfing definitely does not exist. Currently as of 2016 there no WSL, World Surfing League contest scheduled on the North Shore for women. The women’s WSL tour consists 17 women competing in 7 surfing contest compared to the men’s tour that contains 34 surfers competing in 10 surfing contest. The prize purse disparity is even worse the winner of a men’s surfing contest receives on average a $100,000 while the women’s champion only receives on average $40,000. The economics trickle down from there, because women receive less face time at surfing contest they are less viable to sponsors and as such the male dominated surf industry justify s paying less money in sponsorship.

Oxybenzone, a Common Product in Suncreen’s Commonly Used By Surfer’s, is Killing our Reefs

By |September 26th, 2016|Environmental Concerns|0 Comments

Virtually ever surfer in the world applies sunscreen before they paddle out in the surf.  Tragically one of the most common ingredients in most sunscreens is oxybenzone which not only is harmful to humans recent studies have show that it cause deformities in coral larvae, making them unable to swim, settle out and form new coral colonies.  It also increases the rate at which coral bleaching occurs.

In 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that nearly all Americans were contaminated with oxybenzone. Not only that, but some studies have shown that it penetrates the skin and then increases the production of free radicals when exposed to light. You definitely don’t want a sunscreen ingredient that reacts to the sun by increasing free radical production. This is one way in which oxybenzone is considered a carcinogen. [5]

Using natural sunscreen is a no-brainer. Zinc oxide has long been one of the safest and most trusted sun protection ingredients. It’s a physical sunscreen, which means it blocks the rays from getting to your skin, rather than just neutralizing them.

Using sunscreens with zinc oxide can give you protection from the sun with a side of peace of mind that you are […]

Dr. Beach Should Name at least 4 of the Beaches on the North Shore of Oahu as Top in the World

By |May 26th, 2016|Uncategorized|0 Comments

The North Shore of Oahu has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, yet the famous Dr. Beach never names them in his list of top beaches because of the big surf during the our winter months. Dr. Beach is wrong. Most of our beaches have lifeguards, and in the summer months virtually all the North Shore beaches are super safe. For example the North Shore’s Waimea Bay has the best and largest sandy beach of any beach in Hawaii. it resembles a gigantic swimming pool in the summer months with a sandy bottom and sea turtles swimming near the edges. Dr. Beach should recognize the North Shore Beaches for what they are and include a warning to always consult a lifeguard when entering the water or better yet hire a surf instructor to teach you to surf.
