Oahu is the Best Island to Learn How to Surf in the Hawaiian Islands.

By |May 5th, 2011|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

Oahu is the best Island to learn how to surf on because of it’s age, shape and size. The North Shore is the best side of Oahu to learn to surf on because we are the surfing capitol of the world and never have invasions of Jelly Fish like Waikiki Beach does. The North Shore of Oahu also has dozens and dozens of surf spots many of which are perfect to learn to surf safely.

Sion Milosky RIP – Familyman, Waterman and Super Cool Guy

By |April 6th, 2011|RIP|0 Comments

The surfing community was shocked with the news of Sion Milosky’s passing while surfing giant waves at Mavericks in Norther California on March 16th, 2011. He left behind a beautiful family and a generation of big wave surfers who will forever love and miss him. Sion “died with his boots” on doing what he loved most riding giant waves. Although he died young, he was 35 years old,  he will be remembered as one of the greats, like Eddie Aikau, Mark Foo and Todd Chesser.  Below are 2 videos. The first one is of his friends paddling out and surfing Pipeline in his memory. It’s  hard to truly appreciate how special it is unless you surfed Pipe, but note how young everyone is.   The other video is a tribute to Sion and features pictures of him surfing giant waves…..A fund has been established to donate money to his wife and children.  Love and condolences to his family…

Jimmy Blears 1948 — 2011 North Shore Lifeguard, World Champion Surfer & Friend to All Who Knew Him

By |March 30th, 2011|Jimmy Blears 1948 -- 2011, RIP|0 Comments

The world surfing community suffered a loss in February when we learned of the passing of former world champion James “Jimmy” Blears. Jimmy was best known on the North Shore for his 25 plus years of service as a City & County lifeguard at Sunset Beach Tower 25. It was in the waters at Sunset where Blears saved the lives of several hundred tourists, military and locals from its treacherous currents. In 1972 Jimmy won the World Surfing Championships held in San Diego, California, making him one of five world champion surfers to represent Hawaii. (Fred Hemmings, Derek Ho, Sunny Garcia and Andy Irons are the other four.)

Jimmy was born in 1948 in Los Angeles and moved to Waikiki in 1950. He was raised on the waterfront near what s near the Duke statue and surfboard racks. His family occupied the upstairs of the Steiner building and spent all their free time surfing and diving in this idyllic setting. Jimmy’s father, the legendary “Tally Ho” Lord James Blears had Jimmy and his mother Lee tandem surfing in front of their house when Jimmy was still in diapers. He attended Washington Elementary School in Waikiki and later Punahou, graduating in 1967. […]

Surfing Lessons – The Mental Part

By |February 24th, 2011|How To Do Things Related to Surfing|0 Comments

When talking a surfing lesson many surf students are worried they won’t be able to to stand up.  Here at the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School we know that if you can walk to the water you can walk on water so to speak.  The secret to being successful is all in your head – which is where we come in.  Our surf lessons not only include instructions on how to stand up and control the board but also what to think of while your doing it.  First and foremost we want you to focus on feeling and being balanced.  It’s not so important how fast you get up on your surfboard, but rather that you do it with balance.  Take your time focus your gaze on the shore line ( look up) and you will find your self walking on water or rather surfing a wave in Hawaii for the first time!

How to prepare for a surfing lesson in Hawaii

By |February 11th, 2011|How To Do Things Related to Surfing, Surf Happenings|0 Comments

How do you prepare for a surfing lesson?  Surfing requires a lot of paddling so you should strengthen your arms.  Lifting light weights and or doing push ups help the most.  Having strong stomach muscles will also help a lot with your surfing.  Sit ups and crunches are best.  For balance yoga is also one of the best things you can do to prepare for a surfing lesson. Other then working on your fitness and balance you can also watch the video below of a surfing lesson to see how it all gets put together.

Surfing Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu – Why Does Anyone Ever Stop?

By |January 18th, 2011|Surfing Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu - Why Does Anyone Ever Stop?|0 Comments

I first paddled out at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu in the Winter of 1984 and surfed it almost every day it broke for years and years.  I love the place..it’s a super powerful wave, and beautiful beyond comparison.  Surfing Pipe  is  like playing in the very heart of the ocean.  Fast forward to 2011 and a great surf I had there just three days ago, my first for this Winter and one of only 10 times I’ve paddled out to Pipe in the past 3-years.  What happened, why did I stop riding my favorite wave?  Why does anyone stop riding her?  The thrill is still there, though the people have changed – most of them anyway.  We all get older, our lungs won’t let us paddle as fast or hold our breath as long as we get nailed by huge waves…But, that’s not why we stop or slow down our Pipeline addiction.  It’s more of a changing of the guard kind of like – I had my time and now it’s time to make room for the next generation.  Just imagine if no one ever stopped surfing Pipeline, we would have about 5,000 people in the water. Making a Shift….in Life on the North Shore of Oahu

By |December 12th, 2010|Environmental Concerns|0 Comments

Making a shift in life is easiest when something out of your control happens which forces you to move in a new direction.  While this can be unpleasant at first,  it does  provide opportunities to experience and learn things that could have passed you by.  For me the most recent shift came when my twin sister bought me a vita mix blender for my birthday.  My mother actually made us both buy one for each other.  Some birthday present – $300 later.  While it’s way to much to pay for a blender, try mixing fresh kale, collards, bananas, papayas,  frozen organic blueberries,  yogurt, flax seed oil and ice…Yummy, yummy and more yum.  Now you have the prefect almost raw food diet ever.  I started drinking a  daily blender full of these green smoothies back in September of this year and wow!  My memory has gotten better, my skin has improved, my moods are  more stable (I also stopped drinking coffee) and my energy level is great.  Lucky for me the North Shore is not only the surfing capitol of the world is also the “bread basket of Oahu” meaning it is made up of thousands of acres of some of […]

North Shore Surf Scene Secrets

By |December 3rd, 2010|Musings, North Shore Surf Scene Secretes|0 Comments

Surfs been super small….especially compared with the 10 plus 20ft swells the North Shore surf community enjoyed last Winter….No problem for the North Shore Surf Girls, we can teach surfing on small or big days because we know all the secret spots on the North Shore….Speaking of secrets there’s been some talk on the blogs about how the surfing world protects each other….this is very true…sometimes, well actually often me and my girlfriends laugh so hard at the reality of what’s “really going on” on the North Shore that is.  Mostly it’s just funny, funny stuff and some pretty classic moments too! For me the longer I live this life of surfing everyday the more I feel an obligation to try to make the world and our community a better place….Because I’ve found if you take the time to look under the water out here you will find a lot of Aloha.
