North Shore of Oahu

The North Shore of Oahu is a world-renowned surfing destination located on the northern coast of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The area is famous for its big waves, which attract surfers from all over the world.

During the winter months (November to February), the North Shore experiences massive swells that can reach heights of up to 30 feet. These swells create some of the most challenging and iconic surf breaks in the world, including Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay. Don’t worry though, we teach our surf lessons in a protected cove away safe from the bigger waves!

In addition to surfing, the North Shore offers many other activities and attractions. The area is home to several beautiful beaches, including Haleiwa Beach Park, Waimea Bay Beach, and Sunset Beach. Visitors can also explore the town of Haleiwa, which offers a variety of shops, restaurants, and galleries.

The North Shore is also known for its vibrant surf culture and laid-back atmosphere. Visitors can experience this culture by attending surf competitions, such as the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which takes place annually on the North Shore.

Overall, the North Shore of Oahu is a must-visit destination for surfers and beach lovers alike. Its […]

Falling in Love with Surfing Again

By |May 19th, 2020|Uncategorized|0 Comments

I remember my first winter surfing on the North Shore. It was so exciting! Waking up each morning to a horizon stacked with waves for days, seemed like a dream. Sunburnt skin and salty hair were the only price I paid, or so I thought. Not realizing it, I was falling in love, deeply in love with the ocean and her children, the waves. I was faithful to my love for many years. I travelled to Bali each summer for five years in a row to ward off the summer blues of no waves on the North Shore. (Note there are excellent beginner surf lesson waves in the summer on the North Shore) During the winter months, I faithfully rode Pipeline every time she broke. I slept like a baby and lived off of ramen noodles to save money. Life was simple. My only care was to surf.

Sadly, as it can happen in love, I was distracted. Politics called my name, and I threw my heart and soul into the game. Campaigning is all-consuming; shaking hands, kissing babies, and posting yard signs soon caused me to forget to surf. I swapped […]

Surfing Lessons with Geen Sea Turtles May Soon Be a thing of the Past for Oahu Visitors and Locals alike.

By |May 10th, 2012|Environmental Concerns|0 Comments

It’s no secret that the North Shore is teaming with green sea turtles… We see them at virtually every surfing lesson that we give. Weighing up to 700lbs and living as long as 80 years, they are gentle beautiful creatures that have graced the oceans for as long as 150 million years.  With rare exceptions surfers don’t chase them, feed them or harass them in any way. The result is that surfers and turtles  live in harmony in the surf and on the beautiful beaches of the North Shore and around the island of Oahu even including Waikiki.
When giving a surfing lesson, I often joke with my students that I have TADD, or Turtle Attention Deficit Disorder, because when ever I see a turtle I’m compelled to say “hi” as he or she pops it’s head up for a breath of air in the surf. One day we even rescued a little one that had fishing line wrapped all around it’s neck and flippers. Saving that young turtles long life was a beautiful moment for me and my friend, Christi.

It was not always that way back in In 1973, biologist researching the Hawaiian green sea […]
