Surfer Girl Hair Care

Surfer Girls especially those who teach surfing lessons every day in Hawaii, have special challenges when it comes to having nice hair.  While the sun does it’s job and bleaches it blond it also dries it out beyond belief!  On top of that the salt water and pull from the waves create added stress that would cause a super model to throw a cell phone at anyone.  So what’s a surfer girl to do?  After 20 plus years of surfing and teaching surfing and always looking like I had just stepped out of the ocean I decided to consult an expert – Emilia Perry. She’s a true North Shore Surfer Girl, Pipe charger on both a surfboard and bodyboard, a model and hair dresser at Salon Atlantis in the Haleiwa Market place – this is what she suggested.

1. Put coconut oil in your just before getting in to the surf -this is actually an ancient Hawaiian custom.

2. Wash with super good conditioner – I use a product made my Goldwell, it’s expensive but worth it.

3. Braid your hair before going in to the water.

4.  See a professional at least once every 3 months for a trim,

Top 3 Summer Surfing Spots on the North Shore

For most of the pro surfers on the North Shore, Summer is the time to head South, either to Waikiki or Bali, but for us hard core locals leaving the North Shore for any reason is minimized.  So since it’s well claimed, Goat Island in the Summer is the best spot on the North Shore for surfing.

1. Goat Island – pros and cons – waves every day, bathroom w/ showers – onshore winds most days, long paddle out.

2. Chun’s Reef – pros and cons – super small waves daily, lifeguard – crowded.

3. Malekahana – pros and cons – close to shore – showers – onshore winds most days.

North Shore Surfer and Muscian Jack Johnson's Kokua Festival

Like most girls who grew up learning to surf at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, I surfed with Jack when he was just a kid.  He was one of the top chargers at Pipeline back in his day. I became a fan of  Jack’s  music when I read a story in Surfer Magazine about it. I promptly surfed on over to Napstar and down loaded some of his songs and was amazed with the soulfulness of it.  Below is a music video from his new album To the Sea which should be a big hit.

Lucky for us North Shore people,  Jack or rather “Majic Jack” as my mom calls him, cares a lot about our community and especially children.  He and his beautiful wife Kim started the Kokua Foundation to teach all of us to recycle, reduce and reuse.  While the foundation focuses on children the Johnson’s hold a concert most years at the Waikiki Shell to raise money and stoke everybody out.  This year’s concert was awesome, there was an insane line up of local talent and some legends including Taj Mahal and Ziggy Marly along with Jack.  Lots of good energy at the concert, […]

North Shore Soap Factory Pipeline Women's Pro Surfing Contest Winners

Congratulations to North Shore Surf girl Anastasia Ashley for winning the women’s surfing and to Brazilian Karla Costa-Taylor for winning the women’s bodyboarding divisions of the 21st Annual North Shore Soap Factory Pipeline Women’s Pro in Memory of Josie Over. A big mahalo to event director, Betty Depolito for organizing it too!

It’s great to see the women surfers from around the world given the opportunity to compete at the world’s most prestigious surfing competition venue. What’s not so great is seeing the only women’s contest held at Pipeline awarded dates at the end of the winter, when the waves are small and marginal. Most people don’t understand or even want to know about the “politics” of surfing contest on the North Shore, but it would be helpful to the cause of gender equality if some sun was shined on it. Each Spring the City and County sends permit applications to all the event directors from the previous season inviting them to fill our an application for a contest. We Won! We Won! Turtle Bay Development on the North Shore of Oahu Stopped by Order of the State of Hawaii Supreme Court!

Obviously there’s more to the story then the headline.  A supplemental EIS is what came out of the law suite.   Special thanks to Local 5,  Eric Gill, all the superheros on the North Shore, all the people across the islands and world who donated money to the cause, the many organizations  that rallied and Hawaii’s Kanaka Moali!  Below is a video  I made,  about the issue that  explains why building 5 more hotels on the North Shore of Oahu  was a pretty bad idea.  No offence to the existing Turtle Bay Hotel which the community loves and supports.

North Shore Sunrise Shells in the Surf

Glistening in the sun covering the shores, sunrise shells are becoming more available and rare at the same time.  Sunrise shell jewelry is a must for any real surfer girl.  The colors are so vibrant and show off a tan perfectly.  But what’s the story behind these supposedly rare and valued shells. Sunrise shells are in the scallop family (Langford’s Scallop).  They were very sacred to the ancient Hawaiians. The story goes: “Servants of the kings would walk the beaches and look for Sunrise Shells, but only the Royal Family could wear these magnificent shells.  Some say they received the name “sunrise” because early in the morning (at sunrise) the Sunrise shell would be the easiest shells to spot on the beach. The sun would reflect its rays of the vibrant colors of these beautiful scallop shells.  Others says they received their name of Sunrise shells because if you did not get to the beach before or at sunrise, then someone else would have already found them.  

It is said that only “blessed” people find these rare Hawaiian shells.  They also make an excellent gift to that special surfer girl in your life.  Ask us about them after your surfing lesson.

The Only Women's Surfing and Bodyboarding Contest held at the Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu

A very special surfing event happens every year on the North Shore of Oahu. The surfer girls get a day and sometimes two days to themselves at for an all girls surfing contest at the famous Banzai Pipeline.  It’s a perfect way to wrap up a day of surfing lessons with the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School. 

All of the details are below.  Durning the holding period you can check in with the Surf News Network for daily on or off status updates.

What: Pipeline Women’s Pro. The only Women’s  surf  and bodyboarding event held at the Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu.

The 21st annual  which started as a  bodyboarding event for the first 19 years, shortboarding, stand up surfing and a longboarding expression session was added when North Shore surfing legend and women’s advocate Betty Depolito to over the event.

When:  April 5 to April 19, 2010 (14-day waiting period)

Where:  North Shore, Hawaii, Ehukai Beach Park, Pipeline surf break.
The North Shore is famous for its waves and surf culture.

Who: The best extreme Women surfers and bodyboarders in the World including surfers from Chili, Puerto Rico, Japan, Venezuela, Australia, England, Ireland, USA, Hawaii, Brazil, France and more!

North Shore's Best Surfing Beaches

The best place to surf on the North Shore depends upon what kind of surfer you are. For beginner surfers Puaena Point and Freddie Land are the best places to go. If your an intermediate surfer any place up to 6 ft, except Pipeline and Rocky Rights. After the surf gets over 6 ft., every surf spot is for experts only, especially Pipeline, Sunset, Haleiwa, Waimea Bay and all outside reefs. The good news is that if your wanting to learn how to surf we teach our surfing lessons in a protected cove, so even when the surf is huge on the outside we have small and safe 1-2 ft., waves to teach you to surf on.

Why Teaching Surfing on the North Shore of Oahu is the Best Job in the World!

There is an old saying;  “the secret to happiness is to find something you love and make it your profession”. Well I love surfing and I love teaching.  When I started the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School, I designed it to match the surfer lifestyle – in other words to fit in with what matters most – being in the water and catching waves.  Some pleasant surprises happened along the way; sharing the joy of surfing with people while helping to make them more in tune with the environment tops the list.  Also adopting the beaches we teach surfing at; who knew that keeping a beach clean could feel so good.  Learning more about our Hawaiian culture and passing it on to my surf students – way neat! Getting much better at bodysurfing – always an item on my bucket list. Working close to home – the best! Love, love this life of teaching people how to surf!

North Shore Beach Clean Up Sponsored By Jack Johnson's Kokua Foundation

Jack Johnson could be described as the North Shore’s favorite son. He grew up on the beach in front of Pipeline, surfing and playing music with his friends and brothers. When he “hit the big time”, he started giving back to the community by advocating for sustainability. In the process he started organic gardens at Sunset Beach Elementary School and reached out to Hawaii’s children with his Recycle, Reduce & Reuse program. He also is reaching adults with his Kokua Foundation and Festival. When it became known that one could get a pre-sale ticket if they participated in a beach clean up, I marked my calendar and showed up at Goat Island by 9:00AM on the appointed day, there where also clean ups at 3 other locations. The Kokua Foundation Team and Surf Rider Foundation where there to give out supplies and record names. An estimated 300 people showed up on a Saturday morning to volunteer to clean up one of my favorite Summer time surf spots, Maelaekahana Beach.
