How to Buy the Right Size Surfboard

How to Buy the Right Size Surfboard
Beginning surfers frequently buy too small of a surfboard when they buy their first board.    We suggest that you rent surfboards until you get good enough to ride one that is 9 feet or less in length.  Most surfboard rentals are around $20 a day whereas a new surfboard can cost between $500-$1,000.    So for $500 you could get 25 days of surfboard rentals.  In 25 days, you should be able to move down in size at least  a 10 ft surfboard and so on.

Things to do on your Hawaii Vacation

Planning on a Hawaii vacation and are wondering what you should do.  First, don’t stay in Waikiki, it’s kind of like Las Vegas.  There are lot’s of hotels and cement and little of authentic Hawaii left.  Second, plan your activities on weekdays if you can to avoid locals weekend activities.  Third, take a surfing lesson on the North Shore of Oahu.  The North Shore is the birthplace of competitive surfing and features the best surf schools on the island.

Stand up Paddle Boarding is a Must Do on the North Shore of Oahu

Stand up paddleboarding is a must-do when you visit the North Shore of Oahu.  A 45-minute paddle  up the Anahulu River will thrill young and old You will paddle past green sea turtles on a safe waterway with no waves or currents to worry about.  If you go in the later afternoon you will see the sun setting on the horizon and fall in love with colors too orange to tell.  Stand up paddleboarding is easy, but if you’re nervous in the water or not a good swimmer, get a lesson with an instructor.

Will the World Surf League really pull out of Hawaii?

Will the World Surf League, WSL pull out of Hawaii?  Recent news stories in the Honolulu Advertiser indicate a showdown between the WSL and the City Parks Department.  The fight is over a request by the WSL to change the status of two of its event permit applications.  The City in a letter to the WSL  states that it would be unfair to the rest of the surf contest applicants to do this because all of the allocated time slots are in contention.    Background; the City Parks department  rules allow for a limited number of events on the North Shore.  These rules are generally supported by both the North Shore and surfing community because they cap the amount of time, beaches, and surf spots are restricted from free surfers.  With all of that said there is an exception in the rules that allows the Parks Director  to do whatever he/she wishes.  For example, there is a rule that states that no two surfing events can run in the same permit period. However, the Eddie Akau event has an annual holding period that runs through multiple other contests, this works because the Eddie needs 20 ft or large waves to […]

If the Oceans Die will we run out of Oxygen?

If the Oceans Die will we run out of Oxygen?  Some say yes.  The world’s oceans are also known as the lungs of our planet.  As much as 70% of the world’s Oxygen comes from tiny plants called phytoplankton.  Sadly since the  1950 there has been a 40% decline in their numbers.  Besides supplying  most of the OxygenOxygen we humans breath phytoplankton also provides food for most of the ocean’s creatures.  So while I can’t answer the question definitely, if there is even a chance that if the world’s ocean’s die we lose 70% of the Oxygen we breathe, is it worth taking the chance?

Living the Dream on the North Shore of Oahu – Yes and No.

Life on the North Shore of Oahu can be a little bit blissful for some of us.  We call it “living the dream”.  It’s a term usually saved for those of us who get to live and work at the beach.  The North Shore is known for its beautiful sunsets, white sandy beaches  and fantastic surf spots, so for a surfer, it’s genuinely a dream life to live.  However, there is a dark side to the North Shore that goes beyond too much traffic on the weekends.  For starters the cost of owning a home is out of reach for many of the locals who are a part of our close-knit community.
Along with housing, there is a growing divide between the haves and the have nots.  It’s a reflection of the overall high cost of living in Hawaii.  The Aloha State, for the first time anyone can remember, actually had a net decrease in the number of people living here a number offset by a record 9 million visitors last year.

Volcom Pipeline Pro on Oahu’s North Shore

Volcom Pipeline Pro on Oahu’s North Shore
The 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro is on today at Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore.  The event is  a Men’s QS pro surfing event, with again no women’s division.  It will feature a field of 144 men and no female surfers.  Gender equality in the year 2018 brought to you by the beautiful people at Volcom and the World Surf League.  With that off my chest, it should be a fun event to watch as North Shore local boys, including John John Florence and Jamie O’Brien, will be competing.

Sunsets to Orange to Tell

One of the beautiful things about surfing and living on the North Shore is that I get to watch beautiful sunsets almost every day.  The colors that fill the sky as the sun kisses the ocean fills my heart with a warmth that words can never do justice.
