The North Shore of Oahu has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, yet the famous Dr. Beach never names them in his list of top beaches because of the big surf during the our winter months. Dr. Beach is wrong. Most of our beaches have lifeguards, and in the summer months virtually all the North Shore beaches are super safe. For example the North Shore’s Waimea Bay has the best and largest sandy beach of any beach in Hawaii. it resembles a gigantic swimming pool in the summer months with a sandy bottom and sea turtles swimming near the edges. Dr. Beach should recognize the North Shore Beaches for what they are and include a warning to always consult a lifeguard when entering the water or better yet hire a surf instructor to teach you to surf.

Beaches with shade on the North Shore of Oahu are hard to find.  The best way to find a shady beach on the North Shore of Oahu is to bring a beach umbrella with you.  However, be super careful that it is well anchored in the sand even on days with little wind.  If the wind is strong 15 mph or more do not use an umbrella instead look for a Kamani tree.

Hurricane Alley generating Amazing Surf on Oahu
As I write there are three active category 4 hurricanes literally surrounding the Hawaiian Islands.  This is a bit scary, but Hurricane Alley is generating amazing surf on the North Shore!  Due to hotter and hotter waters in the Pacific Ocean these hurricanes keep coming.  Lucky for Hawaii water temperatures maps around the islands show slightly cooler waters then on either side of us.  This phenomenon appears to be pulling the hurricanes away  from our tiny island chain and at the same time sending us awesome surf.

Most of our students stay off the North Shore, but wished they had stayed on the North Shore of Oahu instead.  So we compliled this list of links to places to stay.
