North Shore Shave Ice Shop Aoki's To Stop Serving Shave Ice to Surfers in Order to Make Way for "Progress"

By |June 7th, 2013|North Shore Shave Ice Shop Aoki's To Stop Serving Shave Ice to Surfers in Order to Make Way for "Progress", Surf Happenings|0 Comments

Not stopping for a shave ice while visiting the North Shore of Oahu is like not going surfing when visiting the North Shore of Oahu. Sadly our choices of the best shave ice on the planet are soon to be reduced to one when Aoki’s is forced to shutter it’s doors on July 31, 2013 so that a strip mall can be built.  Yes, this is progress on the North Shore of Oahu in the year 2013.  So sad and on top of that no one even remembers the cute candle shop that stands next to Aoki’s.

When taking a surfing lesson or Stand Up Paddle Board on the North Shore of Oahu you will be sure to see turtles basking in the sun, swimming in the surf or cruising down the Anahulu Stream all the while popping there adorable turtle heads up to say hi. It’s hard to not stop teaching a surfing lesson if just for a moment to say hi back to our precious green friends. I call it TADD…Turtle Attention Deficit Disorder and have named all the turtles on the North Shore Nemo. Why did I name them all Nemo? Because I can!

Surfing on the North Shore can be crowded especially at the more advanced surfing spots…Beginner surfing lessons are usually never crowded because all the pro surfers favor the more advanced surfing breaks on the North Shore. Every once in a few years a special event happens, the South Shore of Oahu including Waikiki has a good south swell and at the same time the North Shore of Oahu has a late winter episode of good surf. This is a North Shore surfers dream come true because all the townies stay in town and us North Shore locals get to enjoy our favorite surfs spots with out the town crowds…

Hawaii Surfer Girl Keala Kennelly Wins Women's Billabong Global Big Wave Award!

By |May 4th, 2013|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

Keala Kennelly was named the 2013 Girls Billabong Performance Champion last night in California.  She won $5,000 which is pretty good unless you figure that the mens champion won $50,000.  Must be that 10 times more men wear Billabong clothing, one hopes in any case.  Bellow is a summary of the rules for the contest….

The Billabong XXL Ride of the Year Award will be won by the individual surfer who — based on review of available video images by a panel of experts — demonstrates the most advanced and committed level of big wave surfing performance during a single successful ride during the annual event period. Judging criteria is purely SUBJECTIVE and will be calculated from the votes of a large panel of surfers, photographers and surf magazine editors and writers. The first prize will be awarded in the amount of $50,000. Second prize will be awarded in the amount of $5,000. The XXL Ride of the Year finalists finishing third through fifth will receive $1,500 each. The videographer who captures the definitive video clip of the winning ride will be awarded $5,000.

Keeping our Beaches Clean on the North Shore of Oahu For Surfers, Swimmers and All Beach Goers

By |May 3rd, 2013|Environmental Concerns, Keeping our Beaches Clean on the North Shore of Oahu For Surfers, Swimmers and All Beach Goers|0 Comments

Every day thousands of people visit our beaches on the North Shore of Oahu to surf, swim, snorkel and even sun bath and for some reason a small percentage of these people leave trash on the beach.  Please, please don’t be one of these people.  It is the hope of the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School that everyone who goes to the beach will not only take all their trash with them when they leave but also pick up any trash left by fellow beach goes.  Leaving one’s trash at the beach is super ignorant so too is walking by trash left by others.  Let’s all pitch in and keep our beaches pristine.

By |April 21st, 2013|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

There are really so many wonderful things about living on the North Shore. First and most obviously the beaches and off shore waters. We have miles and miles of white sandy beaches. Green sea turtles and monk seals along with an untold number of other shoreline species sharing this space between the land and ocean with us humans. The North Shore is also know as the Surfing Capitol of the World. The title says it all. Every year a couple of thousand or more surfing enthusiast from around the world join the tight knit North Shore community for 7 months of surfing joy. When the waves are perfect it’s  heaven on Earth. When the wind’s blow on-shore and it’s victory at sea, everybody is still happy because the air is clean and filled with the smell of salt. Thirdly the North Shore Sunsets are some of the most beautiful in the world. My favorite one happened one evening at Sunset Beach. I paddled out on my boogie board on a good size swell with strong off shore winds and a full moon on the rise…The sheer beautify of nature came together […]
