How North Shore Surfer John John Florence became the Youngest Guy to Win Vans Triple Crown of Surfing

By |December 12th, 2011|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

Eighteen year old John John Florence proved to the world that he is the best competitive surfer on the North Shore of Oahu, when he won the 39th Annual Triple Crown of Surfing on December 10, 2011.  So how did he do it? Sheer talent played its part to be sure, but what else happened that made John John succeed beyond so many peers?  The answer may be in “Mom John”  or Alex, John John’s mother.    Alex is the only mother who surfs Pipe with her kids.  Can you imaging being out at 8 foot Pipe and having your son yell “go mom go”?  Well that’s the life Alex gave John John and his brothers a mom who surfed Pipe!

Alex Florence AKA “Mom John” looking stoked as her oldest son John Florence holds his Triple Crown of Surfing trophy!

What Happened to the Women's Triple Crown of Surfing on the North Shore of Oahu?

By |December 1st, 2011|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

This winter  on the North Shore of Oahu there are no women’s surfing contest in the Van’s Triple Crown of surfing due to “lack of sponsorship”.  It is a particularly painful year for the Surf Industry Manufactures Association to bail out on the women surfers in Hawaii because local girl Carrissa Moore is the Association of Surfing Professionals World Champion.  One of the Triple Crown of Surfing commenters summed it up while commenting on a men’s event that “the women are a little bit bummed about not being allowed to compete in Hawaii.”  A little bummed? How about heart broken.  The only token being thrown at the women is a wild card giving to Carrissa Moore allowing one women surfer to compete against 200 men.  This is pro surfing’s version of gender equality in the year 2011.

North Shore Surf Fashion or What to Wear on the North Shore of Oahu

By |November 1st, 2011|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

North Shore surf fashion or what to wear on the North Shore of Oahu can best be summed up as causal.  You have to basic options: caus it up or caus it down.  Items to bring with you include, sarongs, bikini’s (you will live in them), Havaiana slippers, (multiple colors if you can) sundress, jeans, sea shell jewelry and tops that show off your well tanned shoulders…Why so causal on the North Shore? Because Haleiwa Joe’s is the fanciest place you will likely go to.  Not to play down Haleiwa Joe’s it’s a delicious steak and sea food restaurant filled with surfing lore.  The North Shore however is the center of the sun, sand and surf lifestyle.  Slippers are always the correct shoe to wear 99% of the time.  Since you will be getting in and out of the water multiple times in a day a bikini (board shorts for the guys) is the only practical thing to  wear. Wrapping a sarong around you after swimming in the ocean gives you the ultimate flexibility to cover yourself in the most flattering way.  So caus it up or caus it down just don’t wear too much and you will enjoy being […]

Can the North Shore of Oahu Add More Surfing Beaches to its Shoreline?

By |May 27th, 2011|Musings, Surf Happenings|1 Comment

Human intervention in the shore line erosion in process in Hawaii is one of the tragedies of modern times.    When shore lines are made hard, as in seawalls,  sand disappears, near shore waves change and entering the water becomes more dangerous.  None the less an island’s job is to erode, it’s just the natural course of things.  If allowed to occur in a natural way (with out seawalls)  sand forms and their is a gentle slop towards the waters edge.  Sand is like a membrane between the earth and the ocean.  Although not all shores have sandy beaches the ones that do are treasured by surfers and all likes of beach goers.  This is because sand is soft and wonderful to walk on, sunbath on and generally enjoy.  Sand is also for the most part a very safe place to walk bare foot or to play in wearing only a swim suite.  The challenge in Hawaii is that people like to build homes, hotels and other structures near the shore line which as the Hawaiian islands erode often come in contact with sandy beaches and eventually and especially in the case of locations with high surf, like the North Shore […]

Surfing Lessons & Other Things to do in the Summer on the North Shore of Oahu

By |May 18th, 2011|Surf Happenings, Surfing Lessons & Other Things to do in the Summer on the North Shore of Oahu|0 Comments

Summer time is almost here and the North Shore of Oahu’s famous huge waves are going to sleep as the Winter moves to the Southern hemisphere.  Not to worry though the North Shore is blessed with trade winds that generate a wind swell that provides beginner surf students with the perfect size waves to learn to surf in.  (Note in the Winter when it’s big we teach surfing lessons in a cove protected from the larger surf).  While a surf lesson is a must do on the North Shore, there are many other fun activities to enjoy  as well.  For starters there are miles of beautiful white sandy beaches to explore which in the Summer are perfect for snorkeling, sea shell collecting and turtle viewing. Feel free to ask one of your surf instructors after your surf lesson for suggestions and directions to some of our secret off the beaten path beaches.

For the  more adventuress type you can go on a shark tour , deep sea fishing or take a sunset cruise all out of Haleiwa Harbor. The Harbor is located on the North-East End of the town and is easy too find.  If your  super brave  or just wanting […]
