Surfing Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu – Why Does Anyone Ever Stop?
I first paddled out at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu in the Winter of 1984 and surfed it almost every day it broke for years and years. I love the place..it’s a super powerful wave, and beautiful beyond comparison. Surfing Pipe is like playing in the very heart of the ocean. Fast forward to 2011 and a great surf I had there just three days ago, my first for this Winter and one of only 10 times I’ve paddled out to Pipe in the past 3-years. What happened, why did I stop riding my favorite wave? Why does anyone stop riding her? The thrill is still there, though the people have changed – most of them anyway. We all get older, our lungs won’t let us paddle as fast or hold our breath as long as we get nailed by huge waves…But, that’s not why we stop or slow down our Pipeline addiction. It’s more of a changing of the guard kind of like – I had my time and now it’s time to make room for the next generation. Life on the North Shore is as close to perfect as it gets!
Being grateful for this beautiful corner of the world is easy to do. Some times though it’s easy to take it for granted. But just yesterday as I was surfing a rather stormy Chun’s Reef with a super duper friend of mine, I realized that the North Shore of Oahu on a “bad day” is better then the best day any where else! OK, so I’ve lived out here so long and home is home, but still, getting to jump in the water for a quick surf session every day or catching a few waves at giant Pipeline with the best surfers in the world, well who gets to do that? And the sunsets out here, world class especially when viewed from the line up or surf zone. I’ve also fallen in love with all the green sea turtles. The Hawaiian name is Honu, but I named them all Nimo. Yes life on the North Shore is as close to perfect as it gets.

What Does Keep the Country, Country Mean?Really
When you come to the island of Oahu and drive on the roads you will see green bumper stickers on people’s cars that say “Keep the Country, Country!” What does Keep the Country, Country really mean? Is it a patriotic statement to support the United States? No, what it means in short is Keep the North Shore of Oahu green and protected from a proliferation of hotels and cement. The North Shore is the recreational back yard for all of the residents of Oahu. Every week end our beach parks, particularly in Haleiwa are filled with local families from around the island. The North Shore is also the surfing capital of the world. Each Winter thousands of surfers travel here to test themselves in the Mecca of surfing. Virtually all of these surfers love the aina (land) and for them Keeping the Country, Country means no more hotels and no more of paving over paradise! So now when you come to the North Shore to learn to surf you know what all those green stickers really mean.

Learning to Surf on the North Shore is Very Safe in the Winter Months
When people think of the North Shore they think of gigantic waves only for professional surfers. The truth is that there are many good surfing waves for beginners and intermediate surfers, you only need to know where. For example the North Shore Surf Girls give lessons during the Winter surf season at a place known as Puaena Point. The wave located on the far right side of Waialua Bay just outside of Haleiwa town is perfect for first time surfers. If you know where to enter the water and how the currents flow you can surf there pretty much everyday during the Winter surf season on the North Shore of Oahu.

First the crowds are way less then the most popular Waikiki surfing Beaches, but that’s only the beginning of the story. The North Shore’s beaches and waters are the cleanest on the Island of Oahu and where else can you learn to surf with sea turtles.

North Shore Surf & Beach Report – Mid June – 2010
The surf on the North Shore the June, has been consistent almost feeling like a long Spring. The water has been crystal clear, the sand clean and the Trade Winds gentle. Really a perfect start to the Summer of 2010. The Annual Hanapaa fishing tournament finished up in Haleiwa Harbor with a fun lua yesterday. There have been two major canoe races with thousands of competitors and family lining Haleiwa Beach Park. Any rain that may bless us burns off by 10:00 am. Haleiwa may well have the best weather in the world. It certainly is the best place in the world for surfing lessons and to learn how to surf!

North Shore Surfer Marvin Foster is Surfing Perfect Pipeline in Heaven
Marvin Foster, 1962-2010
North Shore surfing legend, father, brother and super cool person Marvin Foster passed away May 18th, 2010 in Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu, finding peace at last. He was a fearless surfer with a true North Shore style. Earning the nick names Carving Marvin and Marvelous Marvin he was a master at surfing the Pipeline and set the standard for carving in the early 80’s. In 1980, he was named Rookie of the Year by ASP World Tour. Always a daredevil, he was the first person to go left at big Waimea Bay, and was one of the original invitees to the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational surfing contest.
A straight “A” graduate of Waialua High School, Hawaiian to the core and intelligent, Marvelous Marvin looked you straight in the eye and told you like it was. Loved and respected by his family and friends he will be truly missed.
Marvin is survived by his daughters Vai Tiare Marr-Foster and Zjayna Foster, brothers Daniel, Cyrus, and Kalani Foster, and sister Pua McCormick.

Top 3 Summer Surfing Spots on the North Shore
For most of the pro surfers on the North Shore, Summer is the time to head South, either to Waikiki or Bali, but for us hard core locals leaving the North Shore for any reason is minimized. So since it’s well claimed, Goat Island in the Summer is the best spot on the North Shore for surfing.
1. Goat Island – pros and cons – waves every day, bathroom w/ showers – onshore winds most days, long paddle out.
2. Chun’s Reef – pros and cons – super small waves daily, lifeguard – crowded.
3. Malekahana – pros and cons – close to shore – showers – onshore winds most days.
