What to expect in a Surfing Lesson with the North Shore Surf Girls Surfing School

By |November 27th, 2014|Thoughts on Surfing|0 Comments

Surfing is more than just a sport. It creates perfect harmony for body, mind and spirit with nature. Floating on your board with your legs in the clear blue water and the warm sun on your back, your only thought is about the next wave. When it comes you feel a rush of adrenaline as you are pushed forward by the force of the ocean and triumphantly stand up on your board to ride the wave. You can’t help but smile.

Your first lesson is usually accompanied by some nervousness of the unknown. “Can I do this? Will I be able to stand up? What if I fall?” That’s why an experienced dedicated instructor is key to making your surf experience delightful. With full interactive instruction and coaching on land about the best surf technique, local expertise on the waves and currents, safety review and lots of time for questions, you will enter the water with confidence.

At the end of your lesson your body will be tired but your spirit will be energized and your mind clear. You will soon discover that surfing is like Hawaii. Absolute bliss in paradise.

Surfing on the North Shore can be crowded especially at the more advanced surfing spots…Beginner surfing lessons are usually never crowded because all the pro surfers favor the more advanced surfing breaks on the North Shore. Every once in a few years a special event happens, the South Shore of Oahu including Waikiki has a good south swell and at the same time the North Shore of Oahu has a late winter episode of good surf. This is a North Shore surfers dream come true because all the townies stay in town and us North Shore locals get to enjoy our favorite surfs spots with out the town crowds…

Surfing Lessons and Protecting Your Skin

By |April 20th, 2013|Surf Happenings, Surfing Lessons and Protecting Your Skin|0 Comments

Protecting one’s skin while learning how to surf is very important to many of our surf students. Protecting our skin while teaching our students is also very important to the North Shore Surf Girls…So we usually wear long sleeve surf shirts, long leggings and Coolibar surfing gloves.. A word on the importance of protecting your hands from the sun while surfing; the skin on the back of your hands is very thin and easily damaged by the sun, also when you paddle your surf board the back of your hand facing up and very exposed to the sun….

Things The North Shore Surf Girls Love the Most About Teaching People How to Surf

By |March 20th, 2013|Surf Happenings, Things The North Shore Surf Girls Love the Most About Teaching People How to Surf|0 Comments

There are many things the North Shore Surf Girls love about teaching people to surf, some of our favorites include teaching people with special needs and teaching young children.  Teaching people with special needs especially children is very rewarding and near and dear to our hearts because in part one of our nephews is a special needs guy. Last Summer we taught him to surf and you can imagine the delight he found.  Now his goal in life is to master surfing.  Young children are also among our favorites simply because they are so adorable standing up on a surfboard as they learn to surf for the first time.

How Many Surfing Lessons Does It Take To Learn How To Surf?

By |March 15th, 2013|How Many Surfing Lessons Does It Take To Learn How To Surf?|1 Comment

If a person is fit and motivated the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School can teach you to surf in one surfing  lesson. Most people however, take about three surfing lessons to learn to surf. It should be noted too that truly learning to surf is a life long pursuit, however if you can catch a wave by your self then you have learned the basic and much needed first step. To become an expert  at surfing you have to spend hundreds if not thousands of hours surfing in the ocean. Besides learning to catch waves you also have to learn about the ocean; currents, sets, and so much more. This takes years and while it can be explained one really needs to experience it first hand to really “get it”.

Which is the Best Surf School on the North Shore of Oahu?

By |February 12th, 2013|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

From time to time a potential surf student asks the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School what backs us better then other surf schools on the North Shore of Oahu? My response is that we don’t know, because we have never taken a surfing lesson from one of the other surf schools on the North Shore. We can tell them that with our surf school we focus on the individual needs of our surf students. For example some people are more athletic then others and may learn to surf very quickly, other people need more hands on surfing instruction. Young children also need to have more attention to keep them safe while learning to surf. One question to ask when deciding which surf school to learn from is “are they licensed and do they have insurance?”. Only a few surf schools on the North Shore are actually licensed and insured. Happy surfing!

Our Winter Surfing Lessons Location on the North Shore is Down a Road Named Kahalewai Place

By |November 1st, 2012|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

During the Winter months on the North Shore of Oahu the North Shore Surf Girls teach surf lessons in a protected cove named Puaena Point.  To get there you must turn off of Kamehameha Hwy., onto an unmarked road named Kahalewai.  Part of the North Shore Surf Girls Surf School’s mission in teaching people about the Hawaiian sport of surfing is to share with our students some of the cultural aspects of the area.  A good place to start is with place names.  Puaena Point translates into “hot flower”.  Pua = flower and ena = hot.  Kahalewai translates in to “the house that holds the water”.  Ka = the, hale = house and wai = water.  We find that by learning the Hawaiian names  and meanings of places helps our surf students gain a deeper appreciation for the sport of surfing and we hope a love of the beautiful Hawaiian culture that has given it to us.

Aloha,  Just wanted to share with you a little bit of our philosophy of teaching children to surf.  The North Shore Surf Girls know that each child has a unique personality and ability  to adapt to an aquatic environment.  With that in mind we customize our surf lessons to ensure that your child is safe and feels confident as they become acquainted with surfing and riding waves for the first time.
