North Shore Christmas Gives Surf Biggest of Season

By |December 26th, 2009|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

The Surf on North Shore December 25th, Christmas Day had a special gift for surfers and spectators alike, a solid 25 ft swell Hawaiian style. Even the back of Anahulu Stream had one foot waves breaking in front of the 3rd bridge, not sure how the traveled the mile from the ocean up the meandering stream but they did. I have a camera bag to prove it. Chocolates a rarely breaking wave fronting Surf and Sea was a solid 3 ft and filled with surfing lessons.  People  where towing in on the outside reefs and the sand was returned to Sunset Beach that had washed away durning the last big swell.

North Shore's Best, Biggest & Baddest Surfing Contest Goes Off!

By |December 18th, 2009|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

In the past in order to get a prime viewing spot to watch a surfing contest on the North Shore one would have to be very connected now with the advent of live web casting it’s all about having a high speed connection. So when the Eddie Aikau was called on Tuesday December 8th, I just tuned into the web-cast – surfing the internet was never like this. Below is a highlights video that you will enjoy. As for me I did not want to miss the action in person, so after taking care of business for the day I jumped on my beach cruzer and peddled from Haleiwa Town to Waimea Bay. When I arrived I stood near the front of the judges scaffolding texting my girls, when I heard someone call my name! It was Michele Judy, she was watching from the third level of the judges scaffolding, thanks to helping Jenn Marr serve food to the judges! She signaled for me to come to the back of the tower and got me into one of the best views in the house!

I got to watch the two last and biggest heats of the day! Stoked!  […]

Biggest Surf in 10 years on the North Shore, Oahu Hawaii

By |December 11th, 2009|Biggest Surf in 10 years on the North Shore, Surf Happenings|0 Comments

It’s been a long, long time since I’ve seen surf like this past week on the North Shore. The last time in 1998 it was too big for the Eddie Aikau, this time it was just right – “a solid 35 ft.” to quote Sol Aikau. BTW – Waimea Bay at this size is not a good time to learn to surf.  In the days leading up to this giant swell all of Hawaii was on high alert – predictions of a double swell as big as the one that devastated the North Shore community in 1969 had everyone nervous and excited.  So early Monday morning I awoke and checked to see how the boats where handling the swell in Haleiwa Harbor.  Fortunately they where not rocking too hard and no waves had rolled over Kamehameha Hwy. fronting Surf and Sea.  All’s well so far, so I loaded Mom and Michele one of my North Shore Surf Girls and we drove on a recon mission up to Sunset Beach to pick up Jenn Marr ( a famous unknown) to give her a ride back to Honolulu, she was supposed to help Squidy cook for the Eddie but it was […]

Big North Shore Surf is good to Hawaiian Girls!

By |November 28th, 2009|Surf Happenings|0 Comments

the Hawaiian Girls are 2 for 2 going into the final event of the Triple Crown of Surfing. Kauai’s Alana Blanchard proved to all that she’s got what it takes by winning the Van’s Haleiwa Surfing event and by making the finals of the Sunset Beach Gidget Pro. Carrisa Moore of Oahu also served notice, again, by winning the Gidget Pro. After years and years of sending the girls out in super small “safe” waves, today’s final day of competition held in 6 – 8 ft (Hawaiian scale) proved that women can handle big waves and in fact may just thrive on them. Sadly, North Shore Surfer Girl Coco Ho did not get any waves in her semi final, but she’s young and it was her best result to date at a surfing contest at Sunset Beach.

North Shore Surfer Girl Coco Ho Wins WQS and First WCT Event!

By |October 16th, 2009|North Shore Surfer Girl Coco Ho Wins WQS, Surf Happenings|1 Comment

North Shore Surfer Girl Coco Ho has just won the Association of Surfing Professionals, ASP 2009 World Qualifying Tour at the final event in Brazil. 2009 is her first full year on the ASP World Tour and she’s still in the running to win the ASP World Championship Tour which will wrap up on the North Shore of Oahu in December.

Coco who is sponsored by Volcom, Nike 6.0 and Warrior Wetsuits had this to say upon learning that she had won the WQS; “I have been focusing on the World Tour this year, and I’m having a good year there, so winning the WQS is such a great bonus for me.”

Coco was born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu. She’s an a friendly and articulate young lady who has been surfing real North Shore waves since she was a little girl. Her father is surfing legend Michael Ho and her uncle is World Champion surfer Derek Ho.  She played a young Ann Marie in the Movie Blue Crush and is one of the finest female surfers the North Shore has ever raised.

P.S. Coco won her first WCT event in Portugal on October 30th, 2009. NSSG will be […]

Will Women Surfers Ever Achieve Equality?

By |October 10th, 2009|Musings, Surf Happenings, Will Women Surfers Ever Acheive Equality?|0 Comments

Normally, I try to refrain from commenting on “political” issues relating to surfing, but upon learning that officials in the State of Hawaii have denied the permit for the only and 21st annual women’s contest at Pipeline and upon reading a recent press release detailing the reorganization of the official World Surfing Tour from the Association of Surfing Professionals, ASP I had to comment.

What particularly caught my attention in the ASP press release was the increase in prize money for the men from $3.4 million to $4 million and for the women from US$630,000 to a “generous” $800,000 and the addition of a women’s representative to the governing board. The irony is that the men’s prize money increase is almost as much as the prize purse for women’s entire tour and yet we all know in our hearts that the women’s surfing clothing industry is huge, huge, huge, and that companies like Roxy sells more clothing then Quicksilver.  Why is there such a huge disparity in surfing prize purses?  That goes back to the lack of even a single women on the ASP board of directors until now. However, with one vote on a board of 7 people […]

Learning to Surf in Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu

By |October 7th, 2009|Learning to Surf in Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu, Surf Happenings|0 Comments

Anyone can learn to Surf in Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu, even though the Hawaii tourist board likes to promote Waikiki as the best place to learn to surf, this is only because of all the hotels and expensive shops in Honolulu. The sad truth is that the beaches in Waikiki are fake, that’s right some of the sand was even mined from the North Shore’s famous Waimea Bay. The North Shore of Oahu on the other hand boast miles and miles of natural white sand beaches and has been official designated by the State of Hawaii Government as the Surfing Capitol of the World. The North Shore Surf Girls can teach you to surf even when the surf is big because we take you to a protected cove just outside of the Historic Haleiwa Town. You will lean to surf in gental rolling waves with protected green sea turtles swimming around you.

The views are amazing too. Kaiena Point, not a good place to learn to surf by the way, is visible from both the surfing lineup and the shore line. Mt. Kahala the tallest point on Oahu is also visible while you learn to […]
